You know how difficult it is to find your car at the parking lot in a mall. Well, try finding your offspring on a beach full of look-a-like pups after spending hours, possibly days foraging at sea. Sea lions and seals use vocalization to help them identify their pups because they will rarely waste their hunting skills on another’s pup.

*Movie trivia: Did you know that the key sound used to create the shrill screech of the cloaked villains in THE LORD OF THE RINGS is the cry of an elephant seal pup? You can hear the real unadulterated sound by listening to Angry P the hip hop elephant seal pup, a WADU video.

How You Can Help Ocean Animals

WHAT YOU CAN DO:
Did you know that one of the leading causes for death and injury for sea lions is gun shot wounds? I didn’t and when I found out, I was horrified. Pollution is also a leading cause of death and illness for these outgoing ocean animals. As the saying goes: “Give a hoot, don’t pollute.” When you go to the beach, clean up after yourself and maybe even be so kind as to pick up some trash or recycling left behind by others. This would help keep the ocean clean and make it more livable for marine mammals and land mammals like us worldwide.

Sea lions can eat up to 10% of their body weight at a time, probably because they are not very picky eaters. In fact, they are opportunistic feeders, meaning that when opportunity knocks, they have their mouths wide open. Their diet includes herring, squid, hack fish, and other sea food. Find out more about sea lions and other marine mammals by visiting The Marine Mammal Center, Pier 39, and Ano Nuevo; or by watching one of the WADU videos featuring ocean animals such as: “Hip Hop Elephant Seal”, “Ocean Talk”, or “Sea Lion Pyschic”.

Why You Should Just Say NO to feeding Animals!

You’ve heard it before and read the signs, but did you take the warning seriously? Probably not. It is so tempting when a cute little squirrel comes up to you in the park and promises to befriend you for peanuts. However, feeding a wild animal or leaving food out where a wild animal can get to it does a ton of damage that you might not even see immediately. Not only can it make the animal population more aggressive (and I have seen news reports about pushy park animals who hold children’s snacks for ransom) but it also reduces their ability to fend for themselves and their offspring. As a result, the best may not breed and those who do breed may produce weaker offspring. So try to resist the temptation and JUST SAY NO!

DON’T FEED THE ANIMALS! (even rubber duckie)

Try to resist the temptation to feed bread to ducks. You probably think you are being nice, but despite the immediate gratification, you could do more damage than you realize. It expands in a storage area between their throat and their stomachs called a “crop”, preventing food from passing through and eventually leads to starvation.

Many pet reptiles die from malnutrition. If you have a tortoise you should feed it dark green vegetables like kale or romaine lettuce not ice berg lettuce, which barely has any nutrients at all.

Wildlife Cribs- Let it Be

If you catch a reptile (like a lizard, snake, salamander, or tortoise) in the wild and decide to keep it for a few weeks, you may end up killing it even if you re-release it into the wild. Once removed from the wild, the animal’s resistance to disease becomes attenuated and it could lose its territory and mate. Imagine what would happen to your home and family, if you disappeared for a few months or years.

The biggest population of wild cheetahs exists in Namibia, an African nation, where some 2000-3000 wild cheetahs roam. This population represents roughly 20% of the wild population. Cheetahs often die due to genetic defects which can occur when there is not enough diversity in a population.

Did you know that lemurs are endangered because their habitat is being destroyed at record rates? You probably have heard about how important it is to save the rain forests because many species of animals live in those areas and because the rain forests help reduce the greenhouse effect. Lemurs are one of many species of animals who live in rain forests in Madagascar, an island off the coast of Africa. In fact, many species of lemurs live near or in vanilla trees. So although it is tempting to treat yourself to real vanilla, you would be treating a lemur to a house by purchasing imitation vanilla.

Lemurs like to stay put in one area. Ringtail lemurs can have territories of up to 60 acres in the wild. Black and White Ruff Lemurs also like to stake their claim by giving a shout out to the other animals and will defend their turf from others who are not members of their troop. You can see both ringtail and ruff lemurs in some of the WADU videos including “The Lemurs Pick a Mate” (Pick That Alpha).
